About the Skull Sisters

Skull Sisters is a small, family-run business based out of Bainbridge Island, Washington. The 3 Sisters are Stella, Olive and Clara. Our business originally started because of Covid-19. See, we all 3 love to celebrate Dia de los Muertos with our family, friends and fellow students at school. For the past 8 years, at least one of us has been in a Spanish Immersion school where we have a big celebration for Dia de los Muertos. So, our family would gather every Fall with other families in the program and have a little party making sugar skulls for all of the students to decorate during the school celebration that week. For our family, Die de los Muertos is special because of these gatherings with our living loved-ones where we honor our Dead loved-ones!

Unfortunately, when Covid-19 arrived and school was no longer in-person, our Dia de los Muertos celebrations also changed. We no longer were able to gather and enjoy our friends during this festive time of year. In an effort to keep our beloved holiday in the minds of the local community, the Skull Sisters agreed to hand make and deliver sugar skull-making kits to each of their fellow Spanish Immersion students during the week of Dia de los Muertos.

The idea then struck us to offer them for sale outside of our small community and the support has been fantastic!

A note from SkullMama
Dia de los Muertos, for me, is a celebration about family, friends and those everlasting relationships that you create and nurture over the course of your life. The process of measuring ingredients, weighing, mixing and molding sugar skulls is a very meditative and time-consuming craft that requires our whole family to stop, sit and be together. While we are carefully creating skulls, we end up chatting or singing together. The gratitude that I feel for this precious time together is immeasurable. While we sit in a circle, with all our hands in one huge bowl, I think about previous generations that have also created sugar skulls with their family and friends. Thank you so very much for your support.
