About Dia de los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos is Spanish for Day of the Dead. Dia de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in Mexico in which people remember their loved ones who have passed away. Unlike what some people might think, it is not a sad holiday but instead, it is a day of joy and remembrance!

Beliefs

During Dia de los Muertos, it is believed that the spirits of loved ones may return to visit us and their visit is most welcome. According to Mexican beliefs, when someone dies, they go to the Land of the Remembered (aka the Land of the Dead). As long as they are remembered, they stay in the beautiful Land of the Remembered. But as soon as they are forgotten, they go to The Land of the Forgotten. That is another reason we celebrate Dia de los Muertos: so our loved ones are never forgotten.

Sugar Skulls

Sugar skulls are made of sugar, water, and meringue powder. Our sugar skulls are not for eating. You can use royal icing or even glue to decorate your sugar skulls with sequins, glitter, feathers, and anything else you can think of! The decorated sugar skulls are put on ofrendas (or altars) where you can honor your lost loved ones.
